Into the Darkness

The battlefield is bleak.

The frontline is weak.

Enemies charge & then breach.

Bodies rise & then sink.

They’re scattered on the floor.

Soldiers fight, surrounded, they swarm.

One by one, they’re shot & they’re torn.

“Help! Someone help!” They mourn.

The medic responds,

“If I die, so shall it be.

Our brothers suffer & bleed,

Their bodies wounded & leak.

It’s help they need,

It’s aid they seek.

So I’ll go,

Behind enemy lines, I’ll sneak.

Into the heart of Japan,

To save the lives, lives of my clan.

To rescue my men, to do all that I can.”

For hours upon hours,

Into the darkness he goes,

Searching every log,

Scanning every hole.

He hears a fellow friend,

He huddles around him,

“Brother, I’m here, I’m here to attend.

Where are you hit? What can I amend?”

The man responds,

“Good to see you my friend,

My legs are busted,

& they will not bend.”

“Alright let’s get you up,

Let’s get you home.”

Over the shoulder, his body is thrown.

Intense pain, they both grimace & groan.

He’s carried to safety,

To the edge of the sea, he’s shown.

The medic returns, drops, & prays,

“Father, my legs are failing,

My fingers, not steady.

I’m crawling on my belly,

From my hands to my knees,

Help me stand, give me strength.”

“Here in this world war, this desolate wrath,

Here in this hellhole, this cold & bloody bath,

Father, if it be your will,

Show me the way, show me the path.

Lives are at stake,

Protect me, watch over me, defend me now.

By your power, to fear, I shall not bow.”

“Lord, help me get one more.

For the rain, it crashes & pours.

Starving, broken, & blind.

Our men, I can no longer find.”

“My body, it’s going through hell,

Still our men suffer, shout, & yell.

They’re in need,

Lord, here am I, send me.”

“If this be my end,

So be it, I’ll die for my friends.”

Into the darkness, the medic goes again.
